No One Like You
There is no one like you. You are one of a kind. The world needs your unique talents, skills, and attributes.
There is no one like you. You are one of a kind. The world needs your unique talents, skills, and attributes. Often your unique gifts are tied to your purpose. For many years I went through life, day in and day out, just “being me” and “doing me.” I never really thought that what I was doing could be considered unique just to me. You might be saying what do you mean, Dr. J? Well, let’s look at my personal story. I was an athlete in middle and high school, where I began developing my leadership skills as a captain and co-captain of my respective teams. In college, I held executive offices on the university’s Student Government Association, Sorority campus chapter, and Art Guild. These experiences laid the foundation for me as a leader, which carried over into my career endeavors as a middle school Athletic Director, Head Coach, and middle school and high school administrator. Secondly, since I was in high school and college, my friends would always come to me to ask for advice. Many of my friends that reached out to me were seeking a listening ear or words of encouragement. Through my encouragement, I always try to inspire and motivate others to dream big (beyond their circumstance) and take the next steps. My overall goal was to lift their spirits and have them believe in themselves.
Thirdly, as a former athlete and coach, motivation and encouragement go hand in hand. Even when you are at the top of your game, your own voice can drown out all the positivity you have around you and cause you to be stagnant in your purpose. I know what it’s like to self-doubt and feel you are not good enough.
When you encourage someone, they begin to have hope and feel better about themselves and their situation. Specifically, encouragement can help with self-confidence, success, self-esteem, and validation. Whereas motivation allows a person to change behavior, be creative, set goals, make plans, and boost engagement.
There are a lot of things I like to do (listen to music, draw, paint, graphic design, performing arts, sports), but that is not what makes me unique.
Identifying what makes you unique is not about what you like to do but what talents, skills, and attributes you possess and exhibit daily or weekly. Talents are described as a natural aptitude or skill. Skills are described as the ability to do something well and expertise. Whereas attributes are described as a quality regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone.
As I reflected on my story, I began to see patterns of leadership, encouragement, and motivation that I exhibited that were unique to me.
Earlier I stated that your unique talents, skills, and attributes are often tied to your purpose. What makes me unique and one of a kind is that I am a leader that encourages and motivates others to take their next steps (school, career, health, personal goals, etc.). What is it about your story that makes you unique?
